What would have happened without it!

There are many inventions and discoveries that we use in our lives on a day-to-day basis. They simplify our lives in so many ways and we need to be thankful for that. Through this activity, we aim to make children reflect on the importance of some famous inventions or discoveries and appreciate the same.

Ask students to take some time and think about the purpose of each invention/discovery given. Then, after they reflect on the purpose, ask them to write down what would happen if they have to go about their lives without this invention/discovery. In their responses, check if they have correctly captured the purpose of each one and the problems that would arise if we have to go on without this invention/discovery. Additionally, you could also ask students to research about who invented or discovered each object/concept and find out if there’s a story behind each invention/discovery.

Think & Write

If you get a magic bottle like Arjun, what would you wish for?

It’s good to improve children’s creativity by getting them to let their imagination run wild and dream boundlessly. Through this activity, we aim to nurture the creative side of children by asking them to put their thoughts into writing. Tell children that they have no bounds as to what they could wish for when they get a magic bottle, and ask them to write about it in detail. Their essays should be at least one page long. In their responses, look for good language (sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, spellings, etc.), and see if they are creative. You can even pick some of the most creative write-ups and ask the students to read it out to the rest of the class. Suggest improvements language-wise and even give children suggestions to dream bigger if you see scope for improvement.

Our Kindness Jar

The power of a simple act of kindness is immeasurable. Teaching kids about the act of kindness builds compassion in them and we can therefore build a better tomorrow. Through this activity, we aim to inculcate the habit of bringing happiness to people through kind acts. Since this is a group activity, set some ground rules based on the dynamic of your class to avoid too much hassle and confusion. Source a glass jar and ask some representatives of the class to decorate it based on suggestions from the rest of the class. Once the jar is decorated, ask each student to write at least 3 kind acts in 3 strips of paper. Ask them to fold it up and drop it into the glass jar.

Every day, each student needs to pick at least one strip of paper and complete the act of kindness mentioned in the paper. Ask them to fold up the paper neatly and put it into the jar again, so that it can be used repeatedly. Select a monitor who will look over the completion of activities. Ask children to let a selected monitor know once they complete their act of kindness. If they have completed it, ask the monitor to drop a pebble into another glass jar. Students need to keep at this regularly until the glass jar is full of pebbles!

Once they have completed it, you can organise a small surprise for the class as an appreciation. It could be an extra movie time or an extra story hour or anything else that the kids will appreciate and love!
