Curiopedia

Walk students through the types of natural disasters and the preventive measure to be taken for each one. Read through the precautions mentioned in the book to give them an idea of what has to be done. Sometimes, talk of disasters might make kids fear their safety. Assure them that these happen rarely and they just need to know what to do when a disaster strikes.

In the first aid kit exercise, explain what it is, and what a basic kit should contain. Take a look at what they’ve mentioned in the exercise and guide them to add more necessary items or remove the unnecessary items.
If it is possible to spare resources from the school or request students to bring the required resources from their homes, guide children through making a kit and place it for your class students to use in case of small emergencies.

Think & Write

A fascinating adventure

In this activity, we teach children to write creatively in such a way that the readers are engaged to keep reading further. Staying in line with the tone of the passage given, ask students to continue it as an exciting adventure, but to add their own creative spins to make it all the more engaging. Tell them to let their imagination run wild and add to their own fantasy characters to the story as well!

In their responses, check for good language (sentence structures, spellings, grammar, punctuation, etc.), and see if they have kept the thrilling and excitement element going. Suggest ways for them to make their writing even more engaging if you see areas of improvement.

Activity Corner

Make a diorama

This activity is an excellent way for children to get acquainted with the types of natural disasters, their effects, and the types of habitats in which different disasters occur. For example, a tsunami can only begin near the seashore and a landslide can happen in mountainous areas only. Instruct children to do their research on the disaster that they want to recreate. Their effects, the area it could occur in, etc. Based on that ask them to start working on the diorama. Request them to make it as realistic as possible using minimal resources. Additionally, ask students to learn about the ways in which some of these disasters can be handled and ask them to find out the precautions to be taken as well.

Once all the students have created their diorama, you can even have an exhibition in the class to showcase the work of the students!
